Google Meet White Screen: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

A Google Meet white screen almost always comes from one of three places: your camera’s visual-effects pipeline, a screen-share rendering handoff, or corrupted local site data. Turning off visual effects fixes most camera-side cases instantly. If the whole tab loads white, clear site data for meet.google.com instead.

Find Your Exact Cause in the Table Below

Before you start changing settings, figure out exactly which version of this you’re dealing with and the fix is different for each one.

Camera Tile Turns White The Visual-Effects Pipeline

Google Meet runs your camera feed through an effects pipeline before it ever reaches the meeting grid, even when no filter is active. That pipeline is where this specific failure happens.

Studio Look needs hardware your device might not confirm it has. Google’s own requirements call for Chrome or Edge version 114 or later, WebGL support in the browser, and hardware acceleration turned on.

Miss any one of those three and the effect doesn’t fail with an error message. It renders a blank white frame instead of your video, with no warning shown to you.

Meet decides between your device and the cloud, and that handoff can break mid-call. On lower-powered machines Google’s threshold is a processor with 4 cores or fewer than 8 logical cores. Meet shifts background effects processing to the cloud instead of running it on your device.

Cloud-based effects are currently limited to specific regions: North America, Europe, Central Asia, Southeastern Asia, and Northern Africa, with more regions being added over time.

If your device falls into that cloud-processing category and the connection to Google’s cloud accelerator stalls for even a second, there’s no local fallback to catch the render. You get a white frame instead of your face.

Fix it in under two minutes:

  1. In the meeting, click the three-dot menu and select Apply visual effects.
  2. Set both background effects and Studio Look to None.
  3. If the camera turns normal immediately, this is your cause.
  4. Type chrome://settings/system into the address bar and turn on “Use graphics acceleration when available,” then restart Chrome fully.
  5. Optional check: visit webglreport.com in the same browser. If it flags “Major Performance Caveat” as anything other than “No,” your GPU path isn’t fully available and effects will keep failing until that’s resolved.

Screen Share Looks White to Everyone Else

This one confuses people the most, because your own screen looks completely normal. That mismatch is the diagnostic clue.

What’s actually happening is a rendering handoff failure between your operating system’s screen capture and Meet’s video encoder, not a camera problem, and not a problem with your actual display.

It shows up most often on Windows machines sharing a single app window (not the full screen) while running a GPU-accelerated app in presentation mode, like PowerPoint or a PDF reader.

Fix: stop sharing the individual window and share your entire screen instead. Then confirm the same chrome://settings/system hardware acceleration toggle from above is on the same GPU pipeline handles both screen capture and camera rendering.

The Whole Meet Tab Loads White

If you don’t even get to a join button the page itself is blank white before anything loads this isn’t an effects issue at all.

Corrupted local site data. This is usually leftover cached data from an older version of the Meet web app conflicting with a newer one Google has since pushed.

Click the lock icon in your address bar and open Site settings. Clear cookies and site data for meet.google.com specifically. This won’t sign you out of your Google account or affect any other site.

An extension is blocking the render. Ad blockers, privacy extensions, and some VPN extensions intercept scripts Meet needs to draw the video canvas.

Open a new Incognito window, where extensions are off by default, and join the same meeting there. If it loads correctly, re-enable your extensions one at a time in your normal window until you find the one causing it.

On Android or iPhone, It’s Almost Always the App Cache

The mobile Meet app doesn’t touch Chrome’s rendering engine at all, so none of the browser fixes above apply here.

Android: Settings → Apps → Meet → Storage → tap Clear cache (not Clear data, which signs you out). Reopen Meet and rejoin.

iPhone/iPad: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → find Meet → tap Offload App. Reinstall from the App Store and sign back in.

How to Know If It’s Actually a Hardware Problem, Not Meet

This is the one check most troubleshooting guides skip.

Open your device’s built-in camera app Camera on Windows, Photo Booth on Mac, or your phone’s native camera app completely outside of Meet.

If your camera shows white, washed-out, or overexposed video there too, this isn’t a Google Meet bug at all.

In repair work, this usually traces back to a stuck auto-exposure module on integrated laptop webcams, often after the laptop was dropped or something rested on the keyboard with the lid closed.

If that’s what you’re seeing, the webcam hardware itself needs diagnosis; no browser setting will fix it.

Common Mistakes That Waste Time

  • Reinstalling Chrome first. This rarely fixes it, since the problem is a setting or cached data, not the browser install. Try the acceleration toggle and site data clear before touching the install.
  • Assuming a white screen share means your whole computer has a display problem. It doesn’t render your own screen fine. This is isolated to Meet’s encoding step.
  • Updating your webcam driver as the first step. Worth doing eventually, but only after ruling out the software causes above. Most reports clear up without touching a driver.

FAQ

Why did Google Meet suddenly turn white during a call that was working fine minutes earlier?
This usually means your device switched between local and cloud-based effects processing partway through the call, often triggered by a brief dip in your connection.

Does turning off background blur actually fix the white screen?
Yes, in most camera-preview cases. If disabling every visual effect restores your video immediately, the effects pipeline was the cause, not your camera hardware or a Meet outage.

Does this happen on Firefox and Edge too, or is it Chrome-only?
It can happen on any Chromium-based browser, including Edge, since they share the same rendering engine. Firefox users report it far less, largely because Firefox doesn’t support the full Studio Look feature set.

Can a webcam driver update fix a white screen in Meet?
Only if your camera also shows white outside of Meet, in your device’s native camera app. If it works fine everywhere except Meet, the driver isn’t the problem.
